Fly Trap – Why the Housefly Evades Ambush

Anyone who has tried to swat a fly will know it isn’t easy. As adults, most of us wouldn’t dream of chasing after flies with fly swats, or trying to catch them with our bare hands. Running after a fly with a swat is futile, achieving nothing but raising your blood pressure. A simple fly trap will save you the bother.

Fly Trap – To Catch a Fly

As a child, it’s likely at some point in your young years you tried to catch a fly – in which case, you’ll know how difficult it is. Why is it so impossible to ambush or sneak up on a fly? Because flies have compound eyes. The best way to catch flies is by using a fly trap because their eyes are made up of lots of lenses allowing them to see movement from almost any direction – they literally have eyes in the back of their heads. This is why it’s so difficult to catch a fly because they will always see you coming and are quick off the mark. A fly trap will save you the stress and energy.

Scientists Investigate Fly Trap Techniques

The fact the common housefly is so skilled at evading ambush means investing in a fly trap is the only sure way of dealing with the problem. No matter how stealthy you are with a fly swat, you’ll never be as effective as a fly trap. Scientists discovered how in 2005 using high-speed video camera to capture the reactions of flies. The cameras filmed the flies as black discs were thrown at them from different angles. The results showed that flies used their legs to leap out of harm’s way.
Robin Wooton, an insect biomechanic at Exeter University told the press at the time: “This isn't a reflex reaction…They must be using their brains, but they can't sit there and think about it for long.”

Simple: Invest in a Fly Trap

Fly traps are the most effective way of dealing with the pesky insects. Flies have 4,000 lenses in each eye enabling them to detect fast moving threats. Scientists say that the best way to swat a fly is to always stand behind it – not because they won’t see you but because they leap ‘vertically and backwards’ so by positioning yourself behind them you increase your chances. Or you could simply invest in a good fly trap!
