Pest Control – Lord of the Flies

In Britain, we don’t have the exotic and enormous creatures of America, Australia or other hotter climes. But, things could change. Pest control could be in more demand if, as experts predict, the fly population is set to boom as a result of global warming. And with flies comes disease and germs – more reason why the sales of fly traps could really take off.

Pest control weaving a web

In America, there have been some more unusual forms of pest control – such as the monster spiders’ web that appeared at Lake Tawakoni State Park, Texas. The enormous spider web may have suggested a Lord of the Rings style giant spider, but the web was not the work of one big spider, but millions of small ones. The web functioned as a massive fly trap and was twice the size of a football field. Although initially, white and magical, the web quickly turned brown from all the flies it trapped.

Pest control a priority in the future

As well as being a rare occurrence, such fly traps simply aren’t feasible in the UK. Fly traps and pest control devices provide the only effective way of safeguarding from the threat of increased infestations. A report in the BBC estimated that houseflies and bluebottles could reproduce faster in the warmer temperatures delivered by global warming. Researchers at Southampton University told the BBC that flies’ populations could rise 250% by 2080. Fly traps and other pest control methods will become crucial weapons in the UK armoury to protect us from the infections flies transmit, including diarrhoeal disease.

"Quite alarming"

Pest control will become increasingly sophisticated in the future to deal with the problem. Fly reproduction rates are closely linked to temperature – which is why hotter countries such as Australia tend to be plagued by the insects. The researchers said the potential increase in the fly population was “quite alarming” as without effective pest control there will be a greater incidence in fly-borne disease. Flies spread and transmit bacteria by carrying contaminated material on their bodies or by regurgitating or defecating on food. Although swallows and spiders are natural flytraps, the researchers believe nature won’t be able to provide strong enough pest control as spider and swallow populations are not predicted to increase enough to keep the flies down.

Pest control such as investing in fly traps and other devices, covering food and wrapping up organic waste properly can help safeguard you from disease-carrying insects. But the boost in fly populations as a direct result of climate change is expected to impact on the health of millions across the globe.
