Fly Trap – Life and death debates
Flies plague us with disease, cause irritation and have the power to cause havoc. Flies are one of the most enduring insects, out-populating human beings many times over – they can be found in every corner of the globe. A fly trap may seem like a humble response to this perpetual pest, but the fly trap is the best way of protecting yourself from fly infestations.
Fly trap – Buzz off!
In Brisbane, Australia last year, the fifth International Congress of Dipterology (the study of flies and related insects) met to discuss global biodiversity and exotic diseases. Over 60,000 species plague us with parasites and germs, but they can also help scientists and geneticists learn more about the planet. A fly trap is essential for most, if not all, catering establishments, as well as for schools, hospitals and for domestic use. Certain locations in the world need a fly trap more than others – Australia’s outback perhaps being the most stereotypical. Although many would agree a fly trap is crucial in safeguarding human health, the Dipterologists have turned this annoying flying foe into something of a friend. Dr David Yeates, chair of the organising committee for the Congress of Dipterology told the press that flies are, “of social and economic importance to us, much of our current knowledge about genetics, development and evolution has come about through our use of flies as models. Where would we be in our forensic science and archaeology if it weren't for them?”
It’s a fly trap and you’ve been caught!
Flies may be valuable for study, but for most humans, using a fly trap is crucial to safeguard their well being. Even fly-lover Dr Yeates admitted that they can be unpleasant creatures, responsible for causing, “death or illness to millions of humans, through the transmission of diseases such as malaria, cholera or sleeping sickness.” Using a fly trap routinely in the parts of the world that have high levels of such diseases could save lives.
Fly trap – the Australian salute
There’s no doubt that flies fulfil an important function for biodiversity. And unlike most of the Australian population that respond to huge fly infestations by investing in a fly trap, the Dipterologists were thrilled to be hosting their conference in a country known for its fly problems. Dr Yeates said he was “especially pleased” to hold the Congress in a country where flies play and have played an important part in Australian cultural life, “from the first explorers experience with bushflies to the modern great aussie salute.”
Fly traps protect health
If you’re thinking twice about putting up a fly trap however, it’s worth remembering that flies can cause devastating disease and illness – even in the UK. In 2005, a five year old was killed by E coli - a recent public enquiry into the outbreak revealed dead flies, woodlice and insects were found at a butcher which supplied meat that led to the outbreak. In more exotic countries, humans can be vulnerable to Myiasis, where the larvae of flies are laid in human flesh.
