Pest control – flying high
Whilst we all know that chemicals will kill off the flies that are bothering you, many people are turning away from chemical-based pest control and looking for more environmentally-friendly alternatives. This means that fly trap designers need to look at the real facts about flies in order to produce pest control that works.
Five Fly Facts
- Disease – flies are notorious carriers of disease and have been responsible for outbreaks of serious illness, such as Yellow Fever. Researchers have estimated that, on average, one fly will carry almost 2 million bacteria on its body – all picked up from whatever it’s landed on previously – from faeces to food.
- Life span – flies have a very short life-span in our terms – as little as 21 days. This means that one of the best methods of pest control is to trap flies and stop them from breeding.
- Full-size flies – flies remain at the size they are born. If you see a small fly, it isn’t a baby – just a different variety from the larger ones you’ll see.
- Species – whilst you might be familiar with the common household fly and the larger bluebottle variety, there are in fact over 120,000 species of fly around the world. The largest species grows to around three inches in length.
Resistance – the use of chemical preparations to deal with fly pest control has made flies more resistant to chemically-based fly traps and other systems, making them less and less effective, unless stronger chemicals are used. For many homeowners and businesses, this isn’t an option and so alternative pest control methods are becoming more popular.
